Using aromatherapy bath salts can make your bath time luxurious, relaxing and provide a range of benefits. Imagine yourself sinking into the warm bath water, enveloped in the soothing scents of dried lavender and rose. As the aromatic goodness fills the air, the stress from your busy day melts away and your muscles begin to unwind. But that’s not all – these magical bath salts contain magnesium sulfate and essential oil blends that can help improve sleep quality, alleviate muscle tension, and even enhance mood. Your skin, too, reaps the rewards as the nourishing oils lock in moisture and rejuvenate, leaving behind a silky-smooth touch. Indulge in a good soak and let those bath salts work their magic.
Gathering Your Ingredients And Supplies
Gathering your ingredients and supplies is the exciting first step in making your own bath salts adventure. The simple diy recipes below combine Epsom salt, pink Himalayan salt or Dead sea salt, dried flowers and essential oils to create a relaxing sensation that leaves your skin feeling glowing, soft and refreshed.
To create your personalized relaxation potions, you’ll need a few essential items:
Base Salts
Base salts, such as Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) or coarse salts like Dead Sea salt and Pink Himalayan salt, are the foundation of bath salt mixtures. They enhance the exfoliating properties of bath salts and provide essential minerals that can nourish and detoxify the skin during your bath.
Essential oils
The reason you may want to include essential oils in your bath is for their many therapeutic benefits. They help promote relaxation, ease stress, alleviate muscle tension, and improve overall well-being. Additionally, they offer skincare benefits, such as moisturizing dry skin, soothing irritation, and promoting a healthy, radiant complexion when diluted appropriately in the bath. If you choose to include essential oils in your bath salts, be sure that they are 100% pure and undiluted.
Botanical dried herbs or flowers
You can also add a few dried flowers to your bath salts for their aromatic scent, some added color, and beauty. I’ve included dried lavender, rose, and chamomile in the recipes below.
Mixing bowls
When it comes to selecting mixing bowls for creating bath salts, it’s essential to choose options that are both safe and practical for your DIY projects. My top choices are glass or stainless mixing bowls. Both are considered non-reactive, meaning they won’t interact with the ingredients in your bath salts.
Wooden Spoons
Wooden spoons can be used for blending your bath salt ingredients. They are a good choice because they won’t react with the essential oils and are easy to clean.
Airtight glass jars
Airtight glass jars are important for storing your bath salts. Airtight seals prevent moisture and air from entering the jar, preserving the freshness and quality of the contents. In the case of bath salts, this helps maintain the integrity of the salts and any added essential oils or botanicals.
Before you begin, ensure you have all these items at your fingertips, so you can dive right into the creative process and start crafting your soothing bath salts.
Essential Oil Therapeutic Benefits
The use of essential oils infused into the bath salts create an aromatic experience to melt your stress away. Each essential oil serves a therapeutic purpose.
Lavender– Lavender is a great oil for relaxing and calming the mind. It’s gentle aroma promotes tranquility and may ease stress and anxiety.
Peppermint– Peppermint oil has an uplifting aroma that may help support a refreshing breathing experience, ease sore muscles and headaches. I like to add peppermint to my bath water before exercising as well as after working out.
Eucalyptus– Eucalyptus essential oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that may help soothe bodily aches and pains, promote easy breathing and enhance relaxation.
Frankincense-Frankincense oil is known as the ‘King” of essential oils and may help ease feelings of stress and nourish your skin, leaving you with a sense of calm and refreshed radiance.
Chamomile– Chamomile may have soothing effects on the skin and promote feelings of calm and ease, making it an ideal choice for a relaxing and therapeutic bathing experience.
Botanical Bath Salts Benefits
The healing benefits of herbs have historically been combined in bathing rituals to soothe the body and mind. When steeped in warm bath water, botanicals release delightful fragrances creating a soothing and aromatic ambiance that promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Adding botanical dried herbs and flowers to your bath can enhance the bathing experience offering both aesthetic and therapeutic benefits:
Lavender-dried lavender buds promote relaxation with their sweet floral aroma.
Chamomile- dried chamomile flowers are known to soothe irritated skin, promote calm and relaxation.
Rose petals- dried rose petals may help ease stress, uplift mood, exfoliate and soothe dry skin.
Orange peels- dried orange peels have a slightly coarse texture that can promote gentle exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and leaving your skin smoother.
While adding botanical dried herbs and flowers to your bath can provide numerous benefits, it’s essential to ensure that you use safe and appropriate botanicals, especially if you have allergies or sensitivities. I also like to use a muslin bag to contain the dried herbs and flowers, preventing them from clogging the drain. This infuses the botanicals into your bath creating a delightful bath tea experience.

How Long Does Homemade Bath Salts Last?
Homemade bath salts can last for quite a long time if stored properly. The shelf life of homemade bath salts can vary depending on the ingredients used and how they are stored. Typically, if kept in an airtight glass jar away from moisture and direct sunlight, homemade bath salts can last anywhere from 6 months to a year. However, it is always a good idea to check for any signs of spoilage, such as changes in color or texture, before using them. Also, if you notice any unpleasant odors or irritations when using the bath salts, it is best to discard them and make a fresh batch.
